Crane Crashes Onto East Village Street, Injuring Six
September 29, 2006
Six people are being treated for injuries suffered in a construction accident just before 4 p.m. Friday in the East Village.
The accident has caused a massive traffic tie-up in the area as authorities work to clean up the debris.
Police and fire officials say part of a massive construction crane fell near Third Avenue and East 13th Street, injuring construction workers and bystanders below.
Falling debris from the 30-story crane also partly crushed a taxicab on the street.
"The load shifted and rocked the crew members on the crane," said a witness at the construction site. "They were tossed into the side of the crane, one person seemed to have fractured ribs, the other a possible broken leg."
Police have rerouted traffic around the scene and have closed portions of East 12th, 13th and 14th streets while the clean-up continues.
The accident has also affected L and R subway service in parts of Manhattan.
Meanwhile, crews nearby are responding to a fire in an apartment building on East 11th Street between Second and Third avenues.
